EF Academy is pleased to announce that five of its students studying at our New York campus were selected to take part in the prestigious Columbia University Science Honors Program – an advanced math and science course for Grade 10, 11 and 12 students who have demonstrated an advanced skill set and a specified interest in these subjects. Their acceptance is a result of their hard work and extensive background knowledge in math and science, supported by the joint effort of EF Academy New York’s counseling department, math and science departments and also our IGCSE Coordinator Kim Stein,” said Dr. Oxana Litvine, EF Academy New York science teacher and the faculty member responsible for the applicants’ preparation. “Participating in this program will not only expand the students’ horizons, but will also strengthen their college resumes and will help them get into the top universities in the USA.” In order to be considered for this highly selective course, students were asked to write an essay about their background and interest in math and science. They also had to submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor, and they had to pass a challenging entrance exam.

Our staff in New York supported the 23 EF Academy applicants from the very beginning of the process. Four months in advance of the application deadline, teachers and guidance counselors began by collecting teachers’ recommendations and GPA information for students who met the criteria for the program. School staff also helped the applicants prepare for the entrance exam by supplying materials and holding test prep courses in February and March. Course topics in previous years have included computer programming, organic chemistry, astronomy and astrophysics, DNA dynamics and mathematical curiosities.
