My favorite series in the WH40k universe is the Sandy Mitchell Caiphus Cain series. Gaunts Ghosts and Eisenhorn are both excellent, I can't wait for the next installment in the Blood Pact story arc.
I wish Abnett would followup with the Eisenhorn/Ravenor storyline. I thought First Heretic was the best of the Horus Heresy books so far, the author really made my least favorite Astartes chapter seem sympathetic. Likewise, there is a short story about the Thousands Sons in the Age of Darkness compilation that really left me wanting more. I loved everything but the ending in Ravenor. It was a nice look at what day-to-day life is really like in the 41st millennium - not everybody's balls-deep in Tyranids and Orks all the time. People are still living out their lives as they would today, working similar jobs, going out on the town once the day is done, that sort of thing. The ending, though.
Fifty more pages would have done so much good for that book. It really needed a follow-up after the events with Slyte, along with a rewrite of that bit. One thing that really bugs me was that the whole thing with Zael wasn't really rounded up, and his character arc trailed off a while before that anyway. Does he ever wake up? How did he manage to do what he did to Frauka?
I still loved the trilogy, but yeah, the ending could have used way more work. Too bad BL didn't get rid of their page limit until after it was published.
