I did my own 'fix' in the meantime. For some unknown reason one of the 20 laptops I had to install on actually worked with the Nikkai RS232 adaptor, none of the others did. I found the installer puts two.sys files in the C: Windows ?System32 drivers folder. I tried copying these from the one working laptop onto the other 19 laptops also using the blue CD, replacing the two.sys files, and if by magic, they all now work! Cheers, Tony Thanks for the link. No problem, you are probably better using this driver as it was written for Vista.

I found it by searching for the prolific driver for serial adapters instead of Nikkai, as they are the supplier not the manufacturer. It definitely works for me, I didn't want to mess around with manual install/copy of files, Not that I wouldn't be adverse to doing that either.
